  Anneroseabruptlytoherfeet,andamazedhimbyaveryunexpectedquestion。

  Arnoldburstoutlaughing。

  Annelaidherhandearnestlyonhisarm,andanswered:

  Annedeclinedimpatiently,byagesture。Arnoldwastoodeeplyinterestedinthenewtopictotakeanynoticeofit。

  “WhateverwehavetosayaboutBlanche,Mr。Brinkworth,mustbesaidatsomefittertime。Ibegyouwillleaveme。“

  “Leaveyou!“

  “Yes。Leavemetothesolitudethatisbestforme,andtothesorrowthatIhavedeserved。Thankyou——andgood-by。“

  Arnoldmadenoattempttodisguisehisdisappointmentandsurprise。
