  Therewasnoevadingtheresponsibilitywhichwasnowthrustuponhim。LadyLundiehadannounceditasasettledresolution,onherpart,totraceAnnetotheplaceinwhichshehadtakenrefuge,anddiscoverpurelyintheinterestsofvirtuewhethersheactuallywasmarriedornot。Blanchealreadyoverwroughtbytheexcitementofthedayhadbrokenintoanhystericalpassionoftearsonhearingthenews,andhadthen,onrecovering,takenaviewofherownofAnne’sflightfromthehouse。AnnewouldneverhavekepthermarriageasecretfromBlanche;AnnewouldneverhavewrittensuchaformalfarewellletterasshehadwrittentoBlanche——ifthingsweregoingassmoothlywithherasshewastryingtomakethembelieveatWindygates。SomedreadfultroublehadfallenonAnneandBlanchewasdeterminedasLadyLundiewasdeterminedtofindoutwhereshehadgone,andtofollow,andhelpher。

  ItwasplaintoSirPatricktowhombothladieshadopenedtheirhearts,atseparateinterviewsthathissister-in-law,inoneway,andhisnieceinanother,wereequallylikely——ifnotdulyrestrained——toplungeheadlongintoactsofindiscretionwhichmightleadtoveryundesirableresults。AmaninauthoritywassorelyneededatWindygatesthatafternoon——andSirPatrickwasfaintoacknowledgethathewastheman。
