  Hecouldn’tsay“Yes,“eventhen。Buthesaidwhatwasequivalenttoit。Heasked,savagely,“Whereistheinn?“

  Sheputherarminhis,andwhispered,rapidly,“Passtheroadontherightthatleadstotherailway。Followthepathoverthemoor,andthesheep-trackupthehill。Thefirsthouseyoucometoafterthatistheinn。Youunderstand!“

  Henoddedhishead,withasullenfrown,andtookhispipeoutofhispocketagain。
