  Nowitwasmidnight,andPharaohslept。ButMeriamuntheQueensleptnot。Sherosefromherbed,shewrappedherselfinadarkcloakthathidherface,andtakingalampinherhand,glidedthroughtheemptyhallstillshecametoasecretstairdownwhichshepassed。Therewasagateatthefootofthestair,andaguardsleptbyit。Shepushedhimwithherfoot。

  Heawokeandsprangtowardsher,butsheheldasignetbeforehiseyes,anoldringofgreatQueenTaia,whereonaHathorworshippedthesun。Thenhebowedandopenedthegate。Shesweptonthroughmanypassages,deepintothebowelsoftheearth,tillshecametothedoorofalittlechamberwherealightshone。Mentalkedinthechamber,andshelistenedtotheirtalk。Theyspokemuchandlaughedgleefully。

  Thensheenteredthedoorwayandlookeduponthem。Theyweresixinnumber,evil-eyedmenofEthiopia,andseatedinacircle。Inthecentreofthecirclelaythewaxenimageofaman,andtheywerecuttingitwithknivesandsearingitwithneedlesofironandpincersmadered-hot,andmanyinstrumentsstrangeanddreadfultolookupon。

  Forthesewerethetormentors,andtheyspokeofthosepainsthatto-morrowtheyshouldwreakupontheWanderer,andpractisedthem。

  ButMeriamun,wholovedhim,shiveredasshelooked,andmutteredthusbeneathherbreath:
