  ForcedtolethisterriblemistressgotoLondonwithouthim,Philippewentintowinterquarters,ashecalledit,——thatis,hereturnedtohisatticroominhismother’sappartement。Hemadesomegloomyreflectionsashewenttobedthatnight,andwhenhegotupagain。Hewasconsciouswithinhimselfoftheinabilitytoliveotherwisethanashehadbeenlivingthelastyear。TheluxurythatsurroundedMariette,thedinners,thesuppers,theeveningsintheside-scenes,theanimationofwitsandjournalists,thesortofracketthatwentonaroundhim,thedelightsthattickledbothhissensesandhisvanity,——suchalife,foundonlyinParis,andofferingdailythecharmofsomenewthing,wasnowmorethanhabit,——ithadbecometoPhilippeasmuchanecessityashistobaccoorhisbrandy。Hesawplainlythathecouldnotlivewithoutthesecontinualenjoyments。Theideaofsuicidecameintohishead;notonaccountofthedeficitwhichmustsoonbediscoveredinhisaccounts,butbecausehecouldnolongerlivewithMarietteintheatmosphereofpleasureinwhichhehaddisportedhimselfforoverayear。Fullofthesegloomythoughts,heenteredforthefirsttimehisbrother’spainting-room,wherehefoundthepainterinablueblouse,copyingapictureforadealer。
