  DRSEWARD\'SDIARY

  11October,Evening——JonathanHarkerhasaskedmetonotethis,ashesaysheishardlyequaltothetask,andhewantsanexactrecordkept。

  IthinkthatnoneofusweresurprisedwhenwewereaskedtoseeMrs。Harkeralittlebeforethetimeofsunset。

  Wehaveoflatecometounderstandthatsunriseandsunsetaretohertimesofpeculiarfreedom。Whenheroldselfcanbemanifestwithoutanycontrollingforcesubduingorrestrainingher,orincitinghertoaction。Thismoodorconditionbeginssomehalfhourormorebeforeactualsunriseorsunset,andlaststilleitherthesunishigh,orwhilstthecloudsarestillaglowwiththeraysstreamingabovethehorizon。

  Atfirstthereisasortofnegativecondition,asifsometiewereloosened,andthentheabsolutefreedomquicklyfollows。
