  Tomyintensesurprise,therewasnoonewithhim。

  Hewasquitealone,andonthetableoppositehimwaswhatI

  knewatoncefromthedescriptiontobeaphonograph。

  Ihadneverseenone,andwasmuchinterested。

  “IhopeIdidnotkeepyouwaiting,“Isaid,“butIstayedatthedoorasIheardyoutalking,andthoughttherewassomeonewithyou。“

  Thenheverythoughtfullytookachair,withhisbacktome,sothatImightbeasfreeaspossible,andbegantoread。

  Iputtheforkedmetaltomyearsandlistened。

  WhentheterriblestoryofLucy\'sdeath,andallthatfollowed,wasdone,Ilaybackinmychairpowerless。FortunatelyIamnotofafaintingdisposition。WhenDr。Sewardsawmehejumpedupwithahorrifiedexclamation,andhurriedlytakingacasebottlefromthecupboard,gavemesomebrandy,whichinafewminutessomewhatrestoredme。Mybrainwasallinawhirl,andonlythattherecamethroughallthemultitudeofhorrors,theholyrayoflightthatmydearLucywasatlastatpeace,IdonotthinkIcouldhaveborneitwithoutmakingascene。

  Irememberhowmuchthe`Dailygraph\'and`TheWhitbyGazette\',ofwhichIhadmadecuttings,hadhelpedustounderstandtheterribleeventsatWhitbywhenCountDraculalanded,soIshalllookthroughtheeveningpaperssincethen,andperhapsIshallgetsomenewlight。Iamnotsleepy,andtheworkwillhelptokeepmequiet。
