  TheschoolmistresswasstandingbythecentertableinthesittingroomwhenCaptainCyentered。

  MissPhoebetooktherocker,underprotest。Herhostremainedstanding。

  Theywerethere,asGeorgiannahadsaid。Mr。Thomasonthetopstep,HemanandSimpsononthenextlower,andbehindthemAbelLeonardandagroupofinterestedvolunteers,principallyrecruitedfromthebackroomofthebarbershop。

  Andthewind!ThereisalwaysabreezealongtheTrumetroad,eveninsummer——whenthemosquitoeslieinwaittoleewardlikebuccaneersuntil,sightingthelucklesswayfarerintheoffing,theydrivedownbeforethewindinclouds,literallytoeathimalive。Theyareskillednavigators,thoseTrumetroadmosquitoes,andtheyknowtheadvantageofsnugharborsunderhatbrimsandbehindspreadingears。AndeachindividualsmashedbyafranticpalmleavesathousandbloodrelativestoattendhisfuneralandexactrevengeaftertheCorsicanfashion。

  Now,inDecember,therewere,ofcourse,nomosquitoes,butthewindtoreacrossthosebarehilltopsinguststhatrockedthebuggyonitssprings。Thebayberrybusheshuddledandcrouchedbeforeit。Theskywascoveredwithtumbling,flyingclouds,whichchangedshapecontinually,andrippedintolong,fleecyravelings,thatbrokelooseandpeltedonuntilmergedintothenextbillowymass。Thebaywasgrayandwhite,andinthespotswhereanoccasionalsunbeambrokethroughandstruckit,flashedlikeaturnedknifeblade。
