wrestingmembersofacourtofjustice,toturnbythosemeansblacktowhite,greentogrey,andwhatisstraighttoacrookedply。Forthemoreexpedientdoingwhereof,thesediabolicalministersmakeboththepleadingpartiesbelievethattheircauseisjustandrighteous;foritiswellknownthatthereisnocause,howbadsoever,whichdothnotfindanadvocatetopatrocinateanddefendit,——elsewouldtherebenoprocessintheworld,nosuitsatlaw,norpleadingsatthebar。Hedidintheseextremities,asIconceive,mosthumblyrecommendthedirectionofhisjudicialproceedingstotheuprightjudgeofjudges,GodAlmighty;didsubmithimselftotheconductandguideshipoftheblessedSpiritinthehazardandperplexityofthedefinitivesentence,and,bythisaleatorylot,didasitwereimploreandexplorethedivinedecreeofhisgoodwillandpleasure,insteadofthatwhichwecallthefinaljudgmentofacourt。
Tothiseffect,tothebetterattainingtohispurpose,whichwastojudgerighteously,hedid,inmyopinion,throwandturnthedice,totheendthatbytheprovidenceaforesaidthebestchancemightfalltohimwhoseactionwasuprightest,andbackedwithgreatestreason。IndoingwhereofhedidnotstrayfromthesenseofTalmudists,whosaythatthereissolittleharminthatmannerofsearchingthetruth,thatintheanxietyandperplexednessofhumanwitsGodoftentimesmanifesteththesecretpleasureofhisdivinewill。
Furthermore,Iwillneitherthinknorsay,norcanIbelieve,thattheunstraightnessissoirregular,orthecorruptionsoevident,ofthoseoftheparliamentofMirelingoisinMirelingues,beforewhomBridlegoosewasarraignedforprevarication,thattheywillmaintainittobeaworsepracticetohavethedecisionofasuitatlawreferredtothechanceandhazardofathrowofthedice,habnab,orluckasitwill,thantohaveitremittedtoandpassedbythedeterminationofthosewhosehandsarefullofbloodandheartsofwryaffections。Besidesthat,theirprincipaldirectioninalllawmatterscomestotheirhandsfromoneTribonian,awicked,miscreant,barbarous,faithlessandperfidiousknave,sopernicious,unjust,avaricious,andperverseinhisways,thatitwashisordinarycustomtoselllaws,edicts,declarations,constitutions,andordinances,asatanoutrooporputsale,tohimwhoofferedmostforthem。
