  Wise。Yousaytrue;andthereforedoththenameofCain,Pharaoh,Saul,Judas,andthePharisees,thoughdeadthousandsofyearsagoe,stinkasfreshinthenostrilsoftheworldasiftheywerebutnewlydead。

  mean,everysightandsenceofsincannot{160c}producethatRepentance,thatisRepentanceuntosalvation;repentancenevertoberepentedof。Foritisyetfreshbeforeus,thatMr。Badmanhadasightandsenceofsin,inthatfitofsicknessthathehadbefore,butitdyedwithoutprocuringanysuchgodlyfruit;aswasmanifestbyhissosoonreturningwiththeDogtohisVomit。ManypeoplethinkalsothatRepentancestandsinConfessionofsinonly,buttheyareverymuchmistaken:ForRepentance,aswassaidbefore,isabeingsorryfor,andaturningfromtransgressiontoGodbyJesusChrist。Now,ifthisbetrue,thateverysightandsenceofsinwillnotproduceRepentance,thenRepentancecannotbeproducedtherewherethereisnosightandsenceofsin。Thateverysightandsenceofsinwillnotproducerepentance,towit,thegodlyrepentancethatwearespeakingof,ismanifestinCain,Pharaoh,SaulandJudas,whoallofthemhadsence,greatsenceofsin,butnoneofthemrepentanceuntolife。

  NowIconclude,thatMr。Badmandiddieimpenitent,andsoadeathmostmiserable。

  TheDevilneverfearslosingofthesinner,ifhecanbutkeephimquiet:canhebutkeephimquietinasinfulllife,andquietinhisdeath,heishisown。Thereforehesaith,hisgoodsareinpeace;thatis,outofdanger。ThereisnofearoftheDevilslosingsuchasoul,Isay,becauseChrist,whoisthebestJudgeinthismatter,saith,hisgoodsareinpeace,inquiet,andoutofdanger。

  4。Fourthly,{174d}ItissaidintheBookofPsalms,concerningthewicked,Thereisnobandsintheirdeath,buttheirstrengthisfirm。Bynobands,hemeansnotroubles,nograciouschastisements,nosuchcorrectionsforsinasfalltobetheLotofGodspeoplefortheirs;yea,thatmanytimesfallstobetheirs,atthetimeoftheirdeath。Thereforeheaddsconcerningthewicked,Theyarenottroubledthenlikeothermen,neitheraretheyplaguedlikeothermen;butgoassecurelyoutoftheworld,asiftheyhadneversinnedagainstGod,andputtheirownsoulsintodangerofdamnation。Thereisnobandintheirdeath。Theyseemtogounbound,andsetatliberty,outofthisworld,thoughtheyhavelivednotoriouslywickedalltheirdayesinit。ThePrisonerthatistodyeattheGallowsforhiswickedness,mustfirsthavehisIronsknock’toffhislegs;soheseemstogoemostatliberty,whenindeedheisgoingtobeexecutedforhistransgressions。

  Wickedmenalsohavenobandsintheirdeath,theyseemtobemoreatlibertywhentheyareevenattheWind-upoftheirsinfulllife,thanatanytimebesides。

  HenceyoushallhavethemboastoftheirFaithandHopeinGodsMercy,whentheylyeupontheirdeath-bed;yea,youshallhavethemspeakasconfidentlyoftheirsalvation,asiftheyhadservedGodalltheirdayes:whenthetruthis,thebottomofthistheirboastingis,becausetheyhavenobandsintheirdeath。

  Theirsinandbaselifecomesnotintotheirmindtocorrectthem,andbringthemtorepentance;butpresumptuousthoughts,andanhopeandfaithoftheSpiderstheDevilsmaking,possesseththeirsoul,totheirowneternalundoing。{175a}

  Hencewickedmenshope,issaidtodye,notbefore,butwiththem;

  theygiveuptheGhosttogether。AndthusdidMr。Badman。HissinsandhishopewentwithhimtotheGate,buttherehishopelefthim,becauseitdyedthere;buthissinswentinwithhim,tobeawormtognawhiminhisconscienceforeverandever。

  Theopinionthereforeofthecommonpeopleconcerningthiskindofdying,is{175b}frivolousandvain;forMr。BadmandiedlikeaLamb,orastheycallit,likeaChrisomchild,quietlyandwithoutfear。Ispeaknotthiswithreferencetothestruglingofnaturewithdeath,butastothestruglingoftheconsciencewiththeJudgmentofGod。IknowthatNaturewillstrugglewithdeath。I

  haveseenaDogandSheepdyehardly:Andthusmayawickedmandoe,becausethereisanantipathybetwixtnatureanddeath。Butevenwhile,eventhen,whenDeathandNaturearestruglingformastery,thesoul,theconscience,maybeasbesotted,asbenummed,assencelessandignorantofitsmiserablestate,astheblockorbedonwhichthesicklyes:AndthustheymaydyelikeaChrisomchildinshew,butindeedlikeonewhobytheJudgmentofGodisboundovertoeternaldamnation;andthatalsobythesameJudgmentiskeptfromseeingwhattheyare,andwhithertheyaregoing,tilltheyplungedownamongtheflames。

  AndasitisaverygreatJudgmentofGodonwickedmenthatsodye,foritcutsthemofffromallpossibilityofrepentance,andsoofsalvation{176a}soitisasgreataJudgmentuponthosethataretheircompanionsthatsurvivethem。Forbythemanneroftheirdeath,theydyingsoquietly,solikeuntochrisomchildren,astheycallit,theyarehardened,andtakecouragetogoonintheircourse。

  Forcomparingtheirlifewiththeirdeath,theirsinfulcursedliveswiththeirchild-like,Lamb-likedeath,theythinkthatalliswell,thatnodamnationishappenedtothem;ThoughtheylivedlikeDevilsincarnate,yettheydyedlikeharmlessones。Therewasnowhirl-wind,notempest,noband,norplagueintheirdeath:

  Theydyedasquietlyasthemostgodlyofthemall,andhadasgreatfaithandhopeofsalvation,andwouldtalkasboldlyofsalvationasiftheyhadassuranceofit。Butaswastheirhopeinlife,sowastheirdeath:Theirhopewaswithouttryal,becauseitwasnoneofGodsworking,andtheirdeathwaswithoutmolestation,becausesowastheJudgmentofGodconcerningthem。

  ButIsay,atthistheirsurvivorstakehearttotreadtheirsteps,andtocontinuetoliveinthebreachoftheLawofGod;yeatheycarryitstatelilyintheirvillanies;forsoitfollowsinthePsalm。Thereisnobandsintheirdeath,buttheirstrengthisfirm,&c。Thereforepridecompasseththemthesurvivorsaboutasachain,violencecovereththemasagarment。{176b}Thereforetheytakecouragetodoevil,thereforetheypridethemselvesintheiriniquity。Therefore,Wherefore?Why,becausetheirfellowsdied,aftertheyhadlivedlonginamostprofaneandwickedlife,asquietlyandasliketoLambs,asiftheyhadbeeninnocent。

  Yea,theyarebold,byseeingthis,toconclude,thatGod,eitherdoesnot,orwillnottakenoticeoftheirsins。Theyspeakwickedly,theyspeakloftily。Theyspeakwickedlyofsin,forthattheymakeitbetterthanbytheWorditispronouncedtobe。Theyspeakwickedlyconcerningoppression,thattheycommend,andcountitaprudentact。Theyalsospeakloftily:TheysettheirmouthagainsttheHeavens,&c。Andtheysay,HowdothGodknow,andisthereknowledgeinthemostHigh?Andallthis,sofarasIcansee,arisethintheirheartsfromthebeholdingofthequietandlamb-likedeathoftheircompanions。{177a}

  ThisthereforeisagreatJudgmentofGod,bothuponthatmanthatdyethinhissins,andalsouponhiscompanionthatbeholdethhimsotodye。Hesinneth,hedyethinhissins,andyetdyethquietly。Whatshallhiscompanionsaytothis?WhatJudgmentshallhemakehowGodwilldealwithhim,bybeholdingthelamb-
