  THEPoemscomprisedinthiscollectionarewritteninthePersianstyle,andaregreatlyadmiredbyOrientalscholars,forthetruthfulnesswithwhichtheEasternspiritofpoetryisreproducedbytheWesternminstrel。Theywerechieflycomposedbetweentheyears1814and1819,andfirstgiventotheworldinthelatteryear。Ofthetwelvebooksintowhichtheyaredivided,thatofSuleikawillprobablybeconsideredthebest,fromthemanygracefullove-songswhichitcontains。ThefollowingisHanoi’saccountoftheDivan,andmaywellserveasasubstituteforanythingIcouldsayrespectingit:——
