  siduities,whichsheascribedpartlytothehabitualgallantryofasoldier,andpartly,perhaps,toherownprettyface,wasenjoyingthepeculiaritiesofasceneandsituationwhich,toher,werefullofthecharmsofnovelty。

  Thesailshadbeenhoisted,butasyetnotabreathofairwasinmotion。andsostillandplacidwasthelake,thatnotthesmallestmotionwasperceptibleinthecutter。

  Shehaddriftedintheriver-currenttoadistancealittleexceedingaquarterofamilefromtheland,andthereshelay,beautifulinhersymmetryandform,butlikeafix-

  ture。YoungJasperwasonthequarter-deck,nearenoughtohearoccasionallytheconversationwhichpassed。buttoodiffidentofhisownclaim,andtoointentonhisduties,toattempttomingleinit。ThefineblueeyesofMabelfollowedhismotionsincuriousexpectation,andmorethanoncetheQuartermasterhadtorepeathiscomplimentsbeforesheheardthem,sointentwassheonthelittleoc-

  currencesofthevessel,and,wemightadd,soindifferenttotheeloquenceofhercompanion。Atlength,evenMr。

  Muirbecamesilent,andtherewasadeepstillnessonthewater。Presentlyanoar-bladefellinaboatbeneaththefort,andthesoundreachedthecutterasdistinctlyasifithadbeenproducedonherdeck。Thencameamurmur,likeasighofthenight,aflutteringofthecanvas,thecreakingoftheboom,andtheflapofthejib。Thesewell-

  thingdisagreeable,andleastofallwouldIthinkofre-
