  Thereisnot,perhaps,inthekingdom,amoredogmaticalorluxurioussetofmen,thanthepedantictyrantswhoresideincollegesandpresideatpublicschools。Thevacationsareequallyinjurioustothemoralsofthemastersandpupils,andtheintercourse,whichtheformerkeepupwiththenobility,introducesthesamevanityandextravaganceintotheirfamilies,whichbanishdomesticdutiesandcomfortsfromthelordlymansion,whosestateisawkwardlyapedonasmallerscale。Theboys,wholiveatagreatexpencewiththemastersandassistants,areneverdomesticated,thoughplacedthereforthatpurpose;for,afterasilentdinner,theyswallowahastyglassofwine,andretiretoplansomemischievoustrick,ortoridiculethepersonormannersoftheverypeopletheyhavejustbeencringingto,andwhomtheyoughttoconsiderastherepresentativesoftheirparents。
