  Toprovethetruthofthisremark,Ineedonlyadverttotheintriguesofmarriedwomen,particularlyinhighlife,andincountrieswherewomenaresuitablymarried,accordingtotheirrespectiveranksbytheirparents。Ifaninnocentgirlbecomeapreytolove,sheisdegradedforever,thoughhermindwasnotpollutedbytheartswhichmarriedwomen,undertheconvenientcloakofmarriage,practise;norhassheviolatedanyduty——butthedutyofrespectingherself。Themarriedwoman,onthecontrary,breaksamostsacredengagement,andbecomesacruelmotherwhensheisafalseandfaithlesswife。Ifherhusbandhasstillanaffectionforher,theartswhichshemustpractisetodeceivehim,willrenderherthemostcontemptibleofhumanbeings;andatanyrate,thecontrivancesnecessarytopreserveappearances,willkeephermindinthatchildishorvicioustumultwhichdestroysallitsenergy。Besides,intime,likethosepeoplewhohabituallytakecordialstoraisetheirspirits,shewillwantanintriguetogivelifetoherthoughts,havinglostallrelishforpleasuresthatarenothighlyseasonedbyhopeorfear。
