  Theracecourselayatthefootoftheslope,andnowthegrayandpurplesagewasdottedwithmorehorsesandIndians,moremovingthingsandcolors,thanBostilhadeverseentherebefore。Itwasaspectaclethatstirredhim。ManyfiressentupbluecolumnsofsmokefrombeforethehastilybuiltbrushhutswheretheIndianscookedandate。Blanketsshonebrightinthesun;burrosgrazedandbrayed;horseswhistledpiercinglyacrosstheslope;Indianslolledbeforethehutsortalkedingroups,sittingandloungingontheirponies;

  downinthevalley,hereandthere,wereIndiansracing,andotherswerechasingthewirymustangs。Beyondthisgayandcolorfulspectaclestretchedthevalley,mergingintothedesertmarkedsostrikinglyandbeautifullybythemonuments。

  Bostilwasamongthelasttoridedowntothehighbenchthatoverlookedthehomeendoftheracecourse。HecalculatedthattherewereathousandIndiansandwhitescongregatedatthatpoint,whichwasthebestvantage-groundtoseethefinishofarace。Andtheoccasionofhisarrival,forallthegaiety,wasoneofdignityandimportance。IfBostilreveledinanythingitwasinanhourlikethis。Hisliberalitymadethiseventagreatrace-day。Thethoroughbredswereallthere,blanketed,inchargeofwatchfulriders。Inthecenterofthebrowofthislongbenchlayahuge,flatrockwhichhadbeenBostil\'sseatinthewatchingofmanyarace。Herewereassembledhisneighborsandvisitorsactivelyinterestedintheraces,andalsotheimportantIndiansofbothtribes,allwaitingforhim。

  Itwasafternoonwhenallwasreadyforthisrace,andthesagewasbrightgrayinthewesteringsun。Everybodywasresting,waiting。Thetensequietoftheridersseemedtosettleuponthewholeassemblage。Onlythethoroughbredswererestless。Theyquiveredandstampedandtossedtheirsmall,fineheads。
