mereabilitytoreadthenameofastreetorthenumberofarailwayplatformandthedestinationofatrain。Whenyouenableachildtoreadthese，youalsoenableittoreadthispreface，totheutterdestruction，youmayquitepossiblythink，ofitsmoralsanddocility。Youalsoexposeittothedangerofbeingrunoverbytaxicabsandtrains。Themoralandphysicalrisksofeducationareenormous:everynewpowerachildacquires，fromspeaking，walking，andco-ordinatingitsvision，toconqueringcontinentsandfoundingreligions，opensupimmensenewpossibilitiesofmischief。Teachachildtowriteandyouteachithowtoforge:teachittospeakandyouteachithowtolie:teachittowalkandyouteachithowtokickitsmothertodeath。
Thegreatproblemofslaveryforthosewhoseaimistomaintainitistheproblemofreconcilingtheefficiencyoftheslavewiththehelplessnessthatkeepshiminservitude；andthisproblemisfortunatelynotcompletelysoluble；foritisnotinfactfoundpossibleforaduketotreathissolicitororhisdoctorashetreatshislaborers，thoughtheyareallequallyhisslaves:thelaborerbeinginfactlessdependentonhisfavorthantheprofessionalman。
