  Whenafterawearisomedayspentinanineffectualsearchthroughtheneighborhood,Iwenthometomyroom,whichasyourememberwasafrontoneinalodging-houseontheoppositecornerfromMr。Blake,I

  wassoabsorbedinmindandperhapsImaysayshakeninnerve,bythestrainunderwhichIhadbeenlaboringforsometimenow,thatI

  stumbledupanextraflightofstairs,andwithoutanysuspicionofthefact,triedthedooroftheroomdirectlyovermine。ItisawondertomenowthatIcouldhavemadethemistake,forthehallsweretotallydissimilar,theoneabovebeingmuchmorecutupthantheonebelow,besidesbeingflankedbyagreaternumberofdoors。Buttheintoxicationofthemindisnotfarremovedfromthatofthebody,andasIsayitwasnottillIhadtriedthedoorandfounditlocked,thatIbecameawareofthemistakeIhadmade。

  Withthefoolishsenseofshamethatalwaysovercomesusatthecommittalofanysuchtrivialerror,Istumbledhastilyback,whenmyfoottroduponsomethingthatbrokeundermyweight。Ineverletevensmallthingspasswithoutsomenotice。Stooping,then,forwhatIhadthusinadvertentlycrushed,Icarriedittowhereasinglegasjetturneddownverylow,madeapartiallightinthelonghall,andexaminingit,foundittobeapieceofredchalk。
