  Vicunderstoodandstroveforhisownlifewithamaniac\'smight,forheknewthatonemorewrenchwouldendthething。

  Thisbattlewastothedeath。Thebloodofbothmensmearedthefloorastheytoreateachotherlikewildbeasts,andnomancouldhavetoldwhichoftenesthadthevantagehold,norhowthestrifewouldend。Butitdidendsoon。

  Theheavycoat,thathadsmotheredthefireandsavedVic,smolderedalittle,thenflaredintoflame,lightingthewholecave,andthrowingoutblackandawfulshadowsofthetwofighters。Theywereclosetotheholeintheinnerwallnow。Gresh\'sfaceinthatunsteadyglarewashorribletosee。

  Heloosedhisholdasecond,thenlungedatVicwiththefuryofamadbrute。

  AndVic,whohadfoughtthedevilinhimselftoastandstillthreehoursago,nowcaughtthefiendoutsideofhimforafinishingblow,andthestrengthofthatlaststrugglewasterrific。

  UptothistimeVichadnotspoken。

  Thenhebegantowhineformercy,buthiswhiningmaddenedhisconquerormorethanhisblowshaddone。Forsuchstrifeisnomerewrestlingmatch。Everyblowstruckagainstafellowmanisasthesmellofbloodtothetiger,feedingafiendisheagernesstokill。Beside,Burleighhadamplecauseforvengeance。

  Thecreatureunderhisgripwasnotonlyabootleggerthroughwhoseevilinfluencementookotherlivesorlosttheirown;

  hehadslainoneinnocentman,Vic\'sownfather,andintheroomwherehisdeadmotherlayhadrobbedVic\'shomeofeveryvaluablething。HehadswornvengeanceonallwhoborethenameofBurleigh。WhatfatemightawaitBug,Vicdarednotpicture。

  Onestranglinggripnowcouldfinishthebusinessforever,andhisclutchtightened,asGreshlaybegginglikeacowardforhisownworthlesslife。
