  Andtheyareoftentherespectablelawyers,too,menofhighstanding,whomyouwouldnotthinkwoulddosuchthings.Theyareonthesideofthepowerful,andthebestofthemareallretainedbyrichmenandcorporations.Andwhatistheresult?Oneoftheworstevils,Ithink,thatcanbefallacountry.Thepoormangoeslessandlesstothecourts.Heisgettingbitter,whichisbad,whichisdangerous.Butmenwon\'tseeit.\"

  Itwasonmytonguetorefutethis,tosaythateverybodyhadachance.

  Icouldindeedrecallmanyargumentsthathadbeendrilledintome;

  quotations,even,fromcourtdecisions.Butsomethingpreventedmefromdoingthis,——somethinginhismanner,whichwasneitherargumentativenorcombative.
