  Patty’selopementwiththeyouthofherchoice,takingintoaccountallitsattendantrisks,wasIndeedanexhibitionofcourageandinitiativenotcommontogirlsofseventeen;butWaitstillwasmeditatingamutinymoredaringyet——amutiny,too,involvingacourseofconductmostunusualinmaidensofpuritandescent。

  Shewalkedbackintothekitchentofindherfathersittingplacidlyintherocking—chairbythewindow。Hehadlightedhiscorn—cobpipe,inwhichhealwayssmokedamixtureofdriedsweet—fernasbeingcheaperthantobacco,andhisfaceworesomethingresemblingasmile——afoxysmile——ashewatchedhisyoungest—bornploughingdownthehillthroughthedeepsnow,whilethemoreobedientWaitstillmovedabouttheroom,settingsupperonthetable。
