  Evidentlytheeldestboy,theowneroftheschool-booksstackedinacorner,wasleftinchargewhilehisparentswereabsentatthetheatre。InmanyaFrenchworkingman\'sfamily,sosoonasachildreachestheageofsixorseven,itplaysthepartofmothertoyoungersistersandbrothers。

  Sheopenedthedoorasshespoke,andbadeSchmuckecomein。Suchsplendorastheirabodepossessedwasallconcentratedhere。Bluecottoncurtainswithawhitefringehungfromthemahoganybedstead,andadornedthewindow;thechestofdrawers,bureau,andchairs,thoughallmadeofmahogany,wereneatlykept。Theclockandcandlesticksonthechimneypiecewereevidentlythegiftofthebankruptmanager,whoseportrait,atrulyfrightfulperformanceofPierreGrassou\'s,lookeddownuponthechestofdrawers。Thechildrentriedtopeepinattheforbiddenglories。
