  Fomaspoke,interruptinghisspeechwithloud,malevolentlaughter,andsawthathiswordswereproducinganimpressiononthesepeople。Before,whenhehadspokentoallofthemtheyturnedawayfromhim,steppingaside,forminggroups,andlookingattheiraccuserfromafarwithangerandcontempt。Hesawsmilesontheirfaces,hefeltintheireverymovementsomethingscornful,andunderstoodthatwhilehiswordsangeredthemtheydidnotstingasdeepashewishedthemto。Allthishadchilledhiswrath,andwithinhimtherewasalreadyarisingthebitterconsciousnessofthefailureofhisattackonthem。Butassoonashebegantospeakofeachoneseparately,therewasaswiftandstrikingchangeintherelationofhishearerstowardhim。

  WhenKononovsankheavilyinthechair,asthoughhewereunabletowithstandtheweightofFoma\'sharshwords,Fomanoticedthatbitterandmalicioussmilescrossedthefacesofsomeofthemerchants。Heheardsomeone\'swhisperofastonishmentandapproval:

  Bobrovlaughedperplexedly,buthissmalleyesboredintoFomaasgimlets。AndLupReznikov,wavinghishands,hoppedaboutawkwardlyand,shortofbreath,said:
