  Ihavefirstofallconsideredmankind;andtheresultofmythoughtshasbeen,thatamidstsuchaninfinitediversityoflawsandmanners,theywerenotsolelyconductedbythecapriceoffancy。

  Ihavelaiddownthefirstprinciples,andhavefoundthattheparticularcasesfollownaturallyfromthem;thatthehistoriesofallnationsareonlyconsequencesofthem;andthateveryparticularlawisconnectedwithanotherlaw,ordependsonsomeotherofamoregeneralextent。

  WhenIhavebeenobligedtolookbackintoantiquity,Ihaveendeavouredtoassumethespiritoftheancients,lestIshouldconsiderthosethingsasalikewhicharereallydifferent;andlestIshouldmissthedifferenceofthosewhichappeartobealike。

  Ihavenotdrawnmyprinciplesfrommyprejudices,butfromthenatureofthings。

  Hereagreatmanytruthswillnotappeartillwehaveseenthechainwhichconnectsthemwithothers。Themoreweenterintoparticulars,themoreweshallperceivethecertaintyoftheprinciplesonwhichtheyarefounded。Ihavenotevengivenalltheseparticulars,forwhocouldmentionthemallwithoutamostinsupportablefatigue?
