OFonethingIamcertain,thatthereadermustbemuchdelightedwiththewholesomesmellofthestable,withwhichmanyofthesepagesareredolent;whatacontrasttothesicklyodoursexhaledfromthoseofsomeofmycontemporaries,especiallyofthosewhopretendtobeofthehighlyfashionableclass,andwhotreatofreception—rooms,wellmaytheybestyledso,inwhichdukes,duchesses,earls,countesses,archbishops,bishops,mayors,mayoresses—notforgettingthewritersthemselves,bothmaleandfemale—
congregateandpressupononeanother;howcheering,howrefreshing,afterhavingbeennearlyknockeddownwithsuchanatmosphere,tocomeincontactwithgenuinestablehartshorn。Oh!thereadershallhaveyetmoreofthestable,andofthatoldostler,forwhichheorshewilldoubtlessexclaim,\"Muchobliged!\"—and,lestIshouldforgettoperformmypromise,thereadershallhaveitnow。
Ishallneverforgetanharanguefromthemouthoftheoldman,whichIlistenedtoonewarmeveningasheandIsatonthethresholdofthestable,afterhavingattendedtosomeofthewantsofabatchofcoach—horses。Itrelatedtothemannerinwhichagentlemanshouldtakecareofhishorseandself,whilstengagedinajourneyonhorseback,andwasaddressedtomyself,onthesuppositionofmyonedaycomingtoanestate,andofcoursebecomingagentleman。
