  Merephysicalattractionisanothermatter。Corporeallyconsidered,mennotinfrequentlyfallinlovewiththeiropposites,thephenomenallytallwiththepainfullyshort,theunnecessarilystoutwiththedistressinglyslender。Butevensuchinartisticjuxtapositionsaremuchlesscommonthanweareaptattimestothink。Foritmustneverbeforgottenthattheexceptionalcharacterofthephenomenarendersthemconspicuous,thecustomarymoreconsortedcombinationsfailingtoexciteattention。

  Besides,thereexistsareasonforphysicalincongruitywhichdoesnotholdpsychically。Naturesanctionstheonewhileshediscountenancestheother。Insteadoftheforethoughtsheoncebestoweduponthebody,itreceivesatherhandsnowbutthescantiestattention。Itsdevelopmenthasceasedtobeanobjectwithher。Forsometimepastalmostallhercarehasbeendevotedtotheevolutionofthesoul。Theconsequenceisthatphysicallymanismuchlessspecializedthanmanyotheranimals。Inotherwords,heisbodilylessadvancedintheraceforcompetitiveextermination。Hebelongstoanantiquated,inefficienttypeofmammal。Hisorganismisstillofthejack—of—all—tradespattern,suchasprevailedgenerallyinthemoreyouthfulstagesoforganiclife——onenotspeciallysuitedtoanyparticularpursuit。Wereitnotforhiscerebralconvolutionshecouldnotcompeteforaninstantinthestruggleforexistence,andeventhemonkeywouldreigninhisstead。Butbrainismoreeffectivethanbiceps,andabeingwhocankillhisopponentfartheroffthanhecanseehimevidentlyneedsnogreatexcellenceofbodytosurvivehisfoe。

  Thefieldofcompetitionhasthusbeentransferredfrommattertomind,butthefighthaslostnoneofitskeennessinconsequence。

  Withthesamezealwithwhichadvantageousanatomicalvariationswereseizeduponandperpetuated,psychicalonesarenowgraspedandrenderedhereditary。Nowifoppositesweretofancyandwedoneanother,suchfortunateimprovementswouldsoonbelost。Theywouldbescatteredoverthecommunityatlargeevenittheyescapedentireneutralization。Topreventsodisastrousaresultnatureimplantsadesireforresemblance,whichdesiremaninstinctivelyactsupon。
