Butdeathinflictedbyeachother’shandsawaitsthem,Creon;andthemanyheapsofslain,somefromArgive,somefromThebanmissiles,shallcausebitterlamentationinthelandofThebes。
Alas!forthee,poorcity,thouartbeinginvolvedintheirruin,unlessIcanpersuadeoneman。ThebestcoursewastopreventanychildofOedipusbecomingeithercitizenorkinginthisland,sincetheywereunderabanandwouldoverthrowthecity。Butasevilhasthemasteryofgood,thereisstilloneotherwayofsafety;butthisitwereunsafeformetotell,andpainfultooforthosewhosehighfortuneitistosupplytheircitywitbthesavingcure。
