  Eachoftheseopinionsreceivesacertain,butnotexclusive,supportfromtheactualinnerexperiences,orexperiencessupposedtobeactual,whichweattimeshave。Andwhatisthereason?Itisthatthesefortuitousandeasilyobtainedinnerexperiencesaremuchtoovague,superficialandcapableofvariousinterpretationstoadmitintheirentiretyofonlyasingleinterpretation,oreventoletitappearasofpreponderatingprobability。

  Whocould,witheventolerableexactness,describeinitsgradualcoursethesupposedoverlayingorsinkingorcrumblingofideas?Whocansayanythingsatisfactoryabouttheinhibitionscausedbyseriesofideasofdifferentextent,oraboutthedisintegrationthatafirmcomplexofanykindsuffersbytheuseofitscomponentsinnewconnections?Everybodyhashisprivate\"explanation\"oftheseprocesses,buttheactualconditionswhicharetobeexplainedare,afterall,equallyunknowntoallofus。

  Ifoneconsidersthelimitationtodirect,unaidedobservationandtothechanceoccurrenceofusefulexperiences,thereseemsbutlittleprospectofimprovementinconditions。Howwilloneforexampledeterminethedegreeofobscurationreachedatacertainpoint,orthenumberoffragmentsremaining?
