Ontheotherhand，hehasinthehighestdegreethepowerofsingle-mindeddevotion，whichispre-eminently，thoughnotexclusively，afemininequality。Hisintellectfittedhimforabstractspeculation，ratherthanforimmediatepracticalapplications。Buthewasfromhisyouthupwardsdevotedtothespreadofprincipleswhichheheldtobeessentialtohumanhappiness。Nophilanthropistorreligiousteachercouldlabourmoreenergeticallyandunremittinglyforthegoodofmankind。Heneverforgetsthebearingofhisspeculationsuponthisultimateend。Whateverhislimitations，hebroughtthewholeenergyofasingularlyclear，comprehensive，andcandidintellecttobearuponthegreatestproblemsofhistime；andworkedatthemwithunflaggingindustryformanyyears。Hewaseminentlyqualifiedtobringoutthereallystrongpointsofhiscreed；whilehisperfectintellectualhonestyforcedhimfranklytodisplayitsweakerside。ThroughMillEnglishUtilitarianismgavethefullestaccountofitsmethodanditspresuppositions。Insummarisinghiswork，ImustdwelllessthanIhavehithertodoneuponsurroundingconditions；andtakehisbooks，nearlyintheorderofpublication，asrepresentingthefinaloutcomeofUtilitarianism。HevirtuallyanswersintheLogicthequestion，whataretheultimateprinciplesbywhichtheUtilitarianshadmoreorlessunconsciouslybeenguided。Ishallfirstdealwiththis。IshallthentakehisPoliticalEconomy，asshowinghowtheseprinciplesappliedtosociology，whichought，uponhisshowing，tobethecrowningscience。ThenIshalltakethepoliticalspeculations，whichareafurtherapplicationofthesameprinciples；and，finally，dealwithhisviewsinethicsandinphilosophygenerally。
