dinnerdozebypealsoflaughter,wassometimesinveigledintoactivitiesthatlefthimbreathless,butcuriouslyaglow。WhilePete,polishingsilverinthedining-roomdown-stairs,smiledindulgentlyatthemerryclatterabove——andforgottheteasingpaininhisside。
ButitwasnotallnonsensewithBilly,norgaylaughter。Moreoftenitwasatenderglowintheeyes,asoftnessinthevoice,aradiantsomethinglikeanauraofjoyallabouther,thattoldhowhappyindeedwerethesedaysforher。Therewasproofbywordofmouth,too——longtalkswithBertraminthedancingfirelightwhentheylaiddearplansforthefuture,andwhenshetriedsohardtomakeherhusbandunderstandwhatagood,goodwifesheintendedtobe,andhowshemeantnevertoletanythingcomebetweenthem。
