Hewasnot，however，blindtowhathethoughtthedefectsofhisownCollege；andIhave，fromtheinformationofDr。Taylor，averystronginstanceofthatrigidhonestywhichheeverinflexiblypreserved。Taylorhadobtainedhisfather’sconsenttobeenteredofPembroke，thathemightbewithhisschoolfellowJohnson，withwhom，thoughsomeyearsolderthanhimself，hewasveryintimate。

Bateman，ofChristChurch，wasthetutorofhighestreputation，TaylorwasenteredofthatCollege。Mr。Bateman’slecturesweresoexcellent，thatJohnsonusedtocomeandgetthematsecond-handfromTaylor，tillhispovertybeingsoextremethathisshoeswerewornout，andhisfeetappearedthroughthem，hesawthatthishumiliatingcircumstancewasperceivedbytheChristChurchmen，andhecamenomore。Hewastooproudtoacceptofmoney，andsomebodyhavingsetapairofnewshoesathisdoor，hethrewthemawaywithindignation。HowmustwefeelwhenwereadsuchananecdoteofSamuelJohnson!
