butcanamanrestraintheaffectionsofhismind,andtellthem,sofaryoushallgo,andnofarther?Alas,no!forthemindisasubtleprinciple,andcannotbeconfined。Thewindsmaybeimprisoned;HomersaysthatOdysseuscarriedcertainwindsinhisship,confinedinleathernbags,butHomerneverspeaksofconfiningtheaffections。Itwerebutrightthatthosewhoexhortusagainstinordinateaffections,andsettingourheartstoomuchupontheworldanditsvanities,wouldtellushowtoavoiddoingso。

hadtroubleenoughinwritingmyfirstwork,andIwasnotlongindiscoveringthatitwasonethingtowriteastirringandspiritedaddresstoasetofcountyelectors,andanotherwidelydifferenttoproduceaworkatallcalculatedtomakeanimpressionuponthegreatworld。Ifelt,however,thatIwasinmypropersphere,andbydintofunwearieddiligenceandexertionIsucceededinevolvingfromthedepthsofmyagitatedbreastaworkwhich,thoughitdidnotexactlypleaseme,Ithoughtwouldservetomakeanexperimentuponthepublic;soIlaiditbeforethepublic,andthereceptionwhichitmetwithwasfarbeyondmywildestexpectations。Thepublicweredelightedwithit,butwhatweremyfeelings?
