  Foraspacetheyscannedthegreatexpansebelowthemwitheagereyes。

  Itspreadremoterandremoter,withonlyafewclustersofserethornbusheshereandthere,andthedimsuggestionsofsomenowwaterlessravine,tobreakitsdesolationofyellowgrass。Itspurpledistancesmeltedatlastintothebluishslopesofthefurtherhills——

  hillsitmightbeofagreenerkind——andabovetheminvisiblysupported,andseemingindeedtohangintheblue,werethesnowcladsummitsofmountainsthatgrewlargerandboldertothenorth-westwardasthesidesofthevalleydrewtogether。Andwestwardthevalleyopeneduntiladistantdarknessundertheskytoldwheretheforestsbegan。Butthethreemenlookedneithereastnorwest,butonlysteadfastlyacrossthevalley。
