THEtaskofatranslatorisathanklessoneatbest。Beheneversoskilfulandaccurate,beheneversoamplyendowedwiththedivinequalificationsofthepoet,itisstillquestionableifhecaneversucceedinsayingsatisfactorilywithnewwordsthatwhichhasoncebeeninimitablysaid——saidforalltime——withtheoldwords。Psychologically,thereisperhapsnothingmorecomplexthananelaboratepoem。Thesourcesofitseffectuponourmindsmaybelikenedtoasystemofforceswhichisinthehighestdegreeunstable;andtheslightestdisplacementofphrases,bydisturbingthedelicaterhythmicalequilibriumofthewhole,mustinevitablyawakenajarringsensation。“MatthewArnoldhasgivenusanexcellentseriesoflecturesupontranslatingHomer,inwhichhedoubtlesssucceedsinshowingthatsomemethodsoftranslationarepreferabletoothers,butinwhichheprovesnothingsoforciblyasthatthesimplicityandgrace,therapidity,dignity,andfire,ofHomerarequiteincommunicable,savebytheverywordsinwhichtheyfirstfoundexpression。AndwhatisthussaidofHomerwillapplytoDantewithperhapsevengreaterforce。WithnearlyallofHomer’sgrandeurandrapidity,thoughnotwithnearlyallhissimplicity,thepoemofDantemanifestsapeculiarintensityofsubjectivefeelingwhichwasforeigntotheageofHomer,asindeedtoallpre-Christianantiquity。Butconcerningthisweneednotdilate,asithasoftenbeendulyremarkedupon,andnotablybyCarlyle,inhis“LecturesonHero-Worship。“Whothathasonceheardthewailofunutterabledespairsoundingintheline“Ahi,duraterra,perchenont’apristi?“
