WehaveherereachedverynearlytheultimatephaseofNewTestamentspeculationconcerningJesus。ThedoctrinesenunciatedbyJustinbecameeventually,withslightmodification,theofficialdoctrinesoftheChurch;yetbeforetheycouldthusbereceived,somefurtherelaborationwasneeded。Thepre-existingLogos-ChristofJustinwasnolongerthehumanMessiahofthefirstandthirdgospels,bornofawoman,inspiredbythedivinePneuma,andtemptedbytheDevil。TherewasdangerthatChristologicspeculationmightbreakquiteloosefromhistorictradition,andpassintothemetaphysicalextremeofDocetism。

Nevertheless,theauthorcarefullyavoidstheextremesofDocetismorditheism。NotonlydoesherepresentthehumanlifeofJesusasreal,andhisdeathasatrulyphysicaldeath,buthedistinctlyassertstheinferiorityoftheSontotheFatherJohnxiv。28。Indeed,asM。Revillewellobserves,itispartoftheverynotionoftheLogosthatitshouldbeimperfectrelativelytotheabsoluteGod;sinceitisonlyitsrelativeimperfectionwhichallowsittosustainrelationstotheworldandtomenwhichareincompatiblewithabsoluteperfection,fromthePhilonianpointofview。TheAthanasiandoctrineoftheTrinityfindsnosupportinthefourthgospel,anymorethanintheearlierbookscollectedintheNewTestament。
