  Champenoise,andtookhimonhisstaff。Inspiredbysuchpromotion,PhilippewonthecrossatMontereau。HewitnessedNapoleon’sfarewellatFontainebleau,ravedatthesight,andrefusedtoservetheBourbons。Whenhereturnedtohismother,inJuly,1814,hefoundherruined。

  Joseph’sscholarshipwaswithdrawnaftertheholidays,andMadameBridau,whosepensioncamefromtheEmperor’sprivypurse,vainlyentreatedthatitmightbeinscribedontherollsoftheministryoftheinterior。Joseph,moreofapainterthanever,wasdelightedwiththeturnofevents,andentreatedhismothertolethimgotoMonsieurRegnauld,promisingtoearnhisownliving。Hedeclaredhewasquitesufficientlyadvancedinthesecondclasstogetonwithoutrhetoric。
