TheprogressiveimprovementofsteamprintingmachinerywasnotaffectedbyMr。Walter’sdeath，whichoccurredin1847。Hehadgivenitanimpulsewhichitneverlost。In1846Mr。Applegathpatentedcertainimportantimprovementsinthesteampress。Thegeneraldispositionofhisnewmachinewasthatofaverticalcylinder200inchesincircumference，holdingonitthetypeanddistributingsurfaces，andsurroundedalternatelybyinkingrollersandpressingcylinders。Mr。Applegathestimatedinhisspecificationthatinhisnewverticalsystemthemachine，witheightcylinders，wouldprintabout10，000sheetsperhour。Thenewprintingpresscameintousein1848，andcompletelyjustifiedtheanticipationsofitsprojector。
