AboutthefirstofAugust，ImadeanincursionintotheIndiancountry，withapartyofnineteenmen，inordertosurpriseasmalltownupSciotha，calledPaint—Creek—Town。Weadvancedwithinfourmilesthereof，wherewemetapartyofthirtyIndians，ontheirmarchagainstBoonsborough，intendingtojointheothersfromChelicothe。Asmartfightensuedbetwixtusforsometime：Atlengththesavagesgaveway，andfled。Wehadnolossonourside：
Theenemyhadonekilled，andtwowounded。Wetookfromthemthreehorses，andalltheirbaggage；andbeinginformed，bytwoofournumberthatwenttotheirtown，thattheIndianshadentirelyevacuatedit，weproceedednofurther，andreturnedwithallpossibleexpeditiontoassistourgarrisonagainsttheotherparty。

Ontheeighth，theIndianarmyarrived，beingfourhundredandforty—fourinnumber，commandedbyCapt。Duquesne，elevenotherFrenchmen，andsomeoftheirownchiefs，andmarchedupwithinviewofourfort，withBritishandFrenchcoloursflying；andhavingsentasummonstome，inhisBritannickMajesty’sname，tosurrenderthefort，Irequestedtwodaysconsideration，whichwasgranted。
