Butotherscholarsofeminencewerenowworkinginthisfield,andchiefamongthemLeClerc。VirtuallydrivenoutofGeneva,hetookrefugeatAmsterdam,andtherepublishedaseriesofworksupontheHebrewlanguage,theinterpretationofScripture,andthelike。InthesehecombatedtheprevalentideathatHebrewwastheprimitivetongue,expressedtheopinionthatinthepluralformofthewordusedinGenesisforGod,“Elohim。”
thereisatraceofChaldeanpolytheism,and,inhisdiscussionontheserpentwhotemptedEve,curiouslyanticipatedmoderngeologicalandzoologicalideasbyquietlyconfessinghisinabilitytoseehowdeprivingtheserpentoffeetandcompellinghimtogoonhisbellycouldbepunishment——sinceallthiswasnaturaltotheanimal。Healsoventuredquasi-scientificexplanationsoftheconfusionoftonguesatBabel,thedestructionofSodom,theconversionofLot’swifeintoapillarofsalt,andthedividingoftheRedSea。AstothePentateuchingeneral,hecompletelyrejectedtheideathatitwaswrittenbyMoses。ButhismostpermanentgifttothethinkingworldwashisanswertothosewhoinsisteduponthereferencebyChristandhisapostlestoMosesastheauthorofthePentateuch。Theanswerbecameaformulawhichhasprovedeffectivefromhisdaytoours:“OurLordandhisapostlesdidnotcomeintothisworldtoteachcriticismtotheJews,andhencespokeaccordingtothecommonopinion。”
Againstallthesescholarscameatheologicalstorm,butitragedmostpitilesslyagainstLeClerc。SuchrenownedtheologiansasCarpzovinGermany,WitsiusinHolland,andHuetinFranceberatedhimunmercifullyandoverwhelmedhimwithassertionswhichstillfilluswithwonder。ThatofHuet,attributingtheoriginofpaganaswellasChristiantheologytoMoses,wehavealreadyseen;butCarpzovshowedthatProtestantismcouldnotbeoutdonebyCatholicismwhenhedeclared,inthefaceofallmodernknowledge,thatnotonlythematterbuttheexactformandwordsoftheBiblehadbeendivinelytransmittedtothemodernworldfreefromallerror。
AtthisLeClercstoodaghast,andfinallystammeredoutasortofhalfrecantation。[475]
