NaturallythesebeliefswerebroughtintotheChristianmythologyandadaptedtoit。DuringtheMiddleAgesmanyofthesewell-wroughtstoneswereveneratedasweapons,whichduringthe“warinheaven“hadbeenusedindrivingforthSatanandhishosts;henceintheeleventhcenturyanEmperoroftheEastsenttotheEmperoroftheWesta“heavenaxe“;andinthetwelfthcenturyaBishopofRennesassertedthevalueofthunder-stonesasadivinely-appointedmeansofsecuringsuccessinbattle,safetyonthesea,securityagainstthunder,andimmunityfromunpleasantdreams。EvenaslateastheseventeenthcenturyaFrenchambassadorbroughtastonehatchet,whichstillexistsinthemuseumatNancy,asapresenttothePrince-BishopofVerdun,andclaimedforithealth-givingvirtues。
InthelastyearsofthesixteenthcenturyMichaelMercatitriedtoprovethatthe“thunder-stones“wereweaponsorimplementsofearlyracesofmen;butfromsomecausehisbookwasnotpublisheduntilthefollowingcentury,whenotherthinkershadbeguntotakeupthesameidea,andthenithadtocontendwithatheoryfarmoreaccordantwiththeologicmodesofreasoninginscience。ThiswasthetheoryofthelearnedTollius,whoin1649
