HeansweredsomewhatimpatientlythatIwasentirelymistakenasinfactIwasabouttherebeingmerelyapoliticalring,ofthekindofwhichthepaperswerefondoftalking;thatthe“ring。”ifitcouldbecalledsuch——thatis,theinnercircle——includedcertainbigbusinessmen,andthepoliticians,lawyers,andjudgeswhowereinalliancewithandtoacertainextentdependentuponthem,andthatthesuccessfulmanhadtowinhissuccessbythebackingofthesameforces,whetherinlaw,business,orpolitics。
