  TherecameinmyheadwhatIhadbeentoldthedaybeforeatdinner,ofacavernaboveinthebowelsofthevolcano,aplaceonlytobevisitedwiththelightoftorches,atreasure-houseofthebonesofpriestsandwarriors,andclamorouswiththevoiceofanunseenriverpouringseawardthroughthecranniesofthemountain。Atthethought,itwasrevealedtomesuddenly,howthebungalows,andtheFowlers,andthebrightbusytownandcrowdingships,wereallchildrenofyesterday;andforcenturiesbefore,theobscurelifeofthenatives,withitsgloriesandambitions,itsjoysandcrimesandagonies,hadrolledunseen,likethemountainriver,inthatsea-girtplace。NotChaldeaappearedmoreancient,northePyramidsofEgyptmoreabstruse;andIheardtimemeasuredby“thedrumsandtramplings“ofimmemorialconquests,andsawmyselfthecreatureofanhour。OverthebankruptcyofPinkertonandDodd,ofMontanaBlock,S。F。,andtheconscientioustroublesofthejuniorpartner,thespiritofeternitywasseentosmile。
