  For,inrespecttothelatterbranchofthesupposition,itshouldbeconsideredthatthemosttriflingvariationinthefactsofthetwocasesmightgiverisetothemostimportantmiscalculations,bydivertingthoroughlythetwocoursesofevents;verymuchas,inarithmetic,anerrorwhich,initsownindividuality,maybeinappreciable,produces,atlength,bydintofmultiplicationatallpointsoftheprocess,aresultenormouslyatvariancewithtruth。

  And,inregardtotheformerbranch,wemustnotfailtoholdinviewthattheveryCalculusofProbabilitiestowhichIhavereferred,forbidsallideaoftheextensionoftheparallel:-forbidsitwithapositivenessstronganddecidedjustinproportionasthisparallelhasalreadybeenlong-drawnandexact。Thisisoneofthoseanomalouspropositionswhich,seeminglyappealingtothoughtaltogetherapartfromthemathematical,isyetonewhichonlythemathematiciancanfullyentertain。Nothing,forexample,ismoredifficultthantoconvincethemerelygeneralreaderthatthefactofsixeshavingbeenthrowntwiceinsuccessionbyaplayeratdice,issufficientcauseforbettingthelargestoddsthatsixeswillnotbethrowninthethirdattempt。Asuggestiontothiseffectisusuallyrejectedbytheintellectatonce。Itdoesnotappearthatthetwothrowswhichhavebeencompleted,andwhichlienowabsolutelyinthePast,canhaveinfluenceuponthethrowwhichexistsonlyintheFuture。Thechanceforthrowingsixesseemstobepreciselyasitwasatanyordinarytime-thatistosay,subjectonlytotheinfluenceofthevariousotherthrowswhichmaybemadebythedice。Andthisisareflectionwhichappearssoexceedinglyobviousthatattemptstocontrovertitarereceivedmorefrequentlywithaderisivesmilethanwithanythinglikerespectfulattention。Theerrorhereinvolved-agrosserrorredolentofmischief-Icannotpretendtoexposewithinthelimitsassignedmeatpresent;andwiththephilosophicalitneedsnoexposure。ItmaybesufficientheretosaythatitformsoneofaninfiniteseriesofmistakeswhichariseinthepathorReasonthroughherpropensityforseekingtruthindetail。
