  CaptainFitzRoydeterminedtoleavetheStraitofMagellanbytheMagdalenChannel,whichhadnotlongbeendiscovered。Ourcourselayduesouth,downthatgloomypassagewhichIhavebeforealludedtoasappearingtoleadtoanotherandworseworld。Thewindwasfair,buttheatmospherewasverythick;sothatwemissedmuchcuriousscenery。Thedarkraggedcloudswererapidlydrivenoverthemountains,fromtheirsummitsnearlydowntotheirbases。Theglimpseswhichwecaughtthroughtheduskymasswerehighlyinteresting;jaggedpoints,conesofsnow,blueglaciers,strongoutlines,markedonaluridsky,wereseenatdifferentdistancesandheights。

  InthemidstofsuchsceneryweanchoredatCapeTurn,closetoMountSarmiento,whichwasthenhiddenintheclouds。Atthebaseoftheloftyandalmostperpendicularsidesofourlittlecovetherewasonedesertedwigwam,anditaloneremindedusthatmansometimeswanderedintothesedesolateregions。

  Butitwouldbedifficulttoimagineascenewhereheseemedtohavefewerclaimsorlessauthority。Theinanimateworksofnature——rock,ice,snow,wind,andwater——allwarringwitheachother,yetcombinedagainstman——herereignedinabsolutesovereignty。

  June9th——InthemorningweweredelightedbyseeingtheveilofmistgraduallyrisefromSarmiento,anddisplayittoourview。Thismountain,whichisoneofthehighestinTierradelFuego,hasanaltitudeof6800
