WhenChristutterstheprecepts:“Loveyourenemies,blessthemthatcurseyou,dogoodtothemthathateyou,andprayforthemwhichdespitefullyuseyou,andpersecuteyou。”hegivesforareason:“ThatyemaybethechildrenofyourFatherwhichisinheaven:forhemakethhissuntoriseontheevilandonthegood,andsendethrainonthejustandontheunjust。”Onemightthereforebetemptedtoexplainboththehumilityastoone’sselfandthecharitytowardsotherswhichcharacterizespiritualexcitement,asresultsoftheall-levelingcharacteroftheisticbelief。Buttheseaffectionsarecertainlynotmerederivativesoftheism。WefindtheminStoicism,inHinduism,andinBuddhisminthehighestpossibledegree。TheyHARMONIZE
withpaternaltheismbeautifully;buttheyharmonizewithallreflectionwhateveruponthedependenceofmankindongeneralcauses;andwemust,Ithink,considerthemnotsubordinatebutcoordinatepartsofthatgreatcomplexexcitementinthestudyofwhichweareengaged。Religiousrapture,moralenthusiasm,ontologicalwonder,cosmicemotion,areallunifyingstatesofmind,inwhichthesandandgritoftheselfhoodinclinetodisappear,andtendernesstorule。Thebestthingistodescribetheconditionintegrallyasacharacteristicaffectiontowhichournatureisliable,aregioninwhichwefindourselvesathome,aseainwhichweswim;butnottopretendtoexplainitspartsbyderivingthemtoocleverlyfromoneanother。Likeloveorfear,thefaith-stateisanaturalpsychiccomplex,andcarriescharitywithitbyorganicconsequence。Jubilationisanexpansiveaffection,andallexpansiveaffectionsareself-forgetfulandkindlysolongastheyendure。
