  Shegotupatnoonandstoledownstairs。ShehadnotrealizedhowviolentwasherstruggleoverHISchildtillshewaspassingthedooroftheroomwhereitwaslying。Ifshehadnotbeenorderedtogiveupnursing,thatstrugglewouldneverhavecome。Herheartached,butademonpressedheronandpastthedoor。Downstairsshejustpotteredround,dustingherchina,puttinginorderthebookswhich,afterhouse-cleaning,themaidhadarrangedalmosttoocarefully,sothatthefirstvolumesofDickensandThackerayfollowedeachotheronthetopshell,andthesecondvolumesfollowedeachotheronthebottomshelf。Andallthetimeshethoughtdully:’WhyamIdoingthis?WhatdoIcarehowtheplacelooks?Itisnotmyhome。Itcanneverbemyhome!’

  Forlunchshedranksomebeeftea,keepingupthefictionofherindisposition。Afterthat,shesatdownatherbureautowrite。

  Somethingmustbedecided!Thereshesat,herforeheadonherhand,andnothingcame——notoneword——noteventhewaytoaddresshim;justthedate,andthatwasall。Ataringofthebellshestartedup。Shecouldnotseeanybody!ButthemaidonlybroughtanotefromAuntRosamund,andthedogs,whofellfranticallyontheirmistressandinstantlybegantofightforherpossession。
