Wenowproceedtogiveparticularsregardingthepropertiesandfunctionsoftheveins。Therearetwoblood-vesselsinthethoraxbythebackbone,andlyingtoitsinnerside;andofthesetwothelargeroneissituatedtothefront,andthelesseroneistotherearofit;
andthelargerissituatedrathertotherighthandsideofthebody,andthelesseronetotheleft;andbysomethisveinistermedthe\'aorta\',fromthefactthatevenindeadbodiespartofitisobservedtobefullofair。Theseblood-vesselshavetheiroriginsintheheart,fortheytraversetheotherviscera,inwhateverdirectiontheyhappentorun,withoutinanywaylosingtheirdistinctivecharacteristicasblood-vessels,whereastheheartisasitwereapartofthemandthattoomoreinrespecttothefrontwardandlargeroneofthetwo,owingtothefactthatthesetwoveinsareaboveandbelow,withtheheartlyingmidway。
Theheartinallanimalshascavitiesinsideit。Inthecaseofthesmalleranimalseventhelargestofthechambersisscarcelydiscernible;thesecondlargerisscarcelydiscernibleinanimalsofmediumsize;butinthelargestanimalsallthreechambersaredistinctlyseen。Intheheartthenwithitspointedenddirectedfrontwards,ashasbeenobservedthelargestofthethreechambersisontheright-handsideandhighestup;theleastoneisontheleft-handside;andthemedium-sizedoneliesinbetwixttheothertwo;andthelargestoneofthethreechambersisagreatdeallargerthaneitherofthetwoothers。Allthree,however,areconnectedwithpassagesleadinginthedirectionofthelung,butallthesecommunicationsareindistinctlydiscerniblebyreasonoftheirminuteness,exceptone。
