  Thismadetheprisonerslookpale;butthemessengersproceededandsaid,’He,thePrince,said,moreover,thatyethewouldconsideryourpetition,andgivesuchanswertheretoaswouldstandwithhisglory。’Andasthesewordswerespoken,Mr。Wet—Eyesgaveagreatsigh。Atthistheywereallofthemstruckintotheirdumps,andcouldnottellwhattosay:fearalsopossessedtheminamarvellousmanner,anddeathseemedtosituponsomeoftheireyebrows。Now,therewasinthecompanyanotable,sharp—wittedfellow,ameanmanofestate,andhisnamewasoldInquisitive。ThismanaskedthepetitionersiftheyhadtoldouteverywhitofwhatEmmanuelsaid,andtheyanswered,’Verily,no。’ThensaidInquisitive,’Ithoughtso,indeed。Pray,whatwasitmorethathesaiduntoyou?’Thentheypausedawhile;butatlasttheybroughtoutall,saying,’ThePrincebadeusbidCaptainBoanergesandCaptainConvictionbringtheprisonersdowntohimto—morrow;andthatCaptainJudgmentandCaptainExecutionshouldtakechargeofthecastleandtowntilltheyshouldhearfurtherfromhim。TheysaidalsothatwhenthePrincehadcommandedthemthustodo,heimmediatelyturnedhisbackuponthem,andwentintohisroyalpavilion。

  But,oh!howthisreturn,andspeciallythislastclauseofit,thattheprisonersmustgoouttothePrinceintothecamp,brakealltheirloinsinpieces!Wherefore,withonevoicetheysetupacrythatreacheduptotheheavens。Thisdone,eachofthethreepreparedhimselftodie;(andtheRecordersaiduntothem,’ThiswasthethingthatIfeared;’)

  fortheyconcludedthatto—morrow,bythatthesunwentdown,theyshouldbetumbledoutoftheworld。Thewholetownalsocountedofnoother,butthat,intheirtimeandorder,theymustalldrinkofthesamecup。WhereforethetownofMansoulspentthatnightinmourning,andsackclothandashes。Theprisonersalso,whenthetimewascomeforthemtogodownbeforethePrince,dressedthemselvesinmourningattire,withropesupontheirheads。ThewholetownofMansoulalsoshowedthemselvesuponthewall,allcladinmourningweeds,if,perhaps,thePrincewiththesightthereofmightbemovedwithcompassion。But,oh!howthebusy—bodiesthatwereinthetownofMansouldidnowconcernthemselves!Theydidrunhereandtherethroughthestreetsofthetownbycompanies,cryingoutastheyranintumultuouswise,oneafteronemanner,andanotherthequitecontrary,tothealmostutterdistractionofMansoul。

  Well,thetimeiscomethattheprisonersmustgodowntothecamp,andappearbeforethePrince。Andthuswasthemanneroftheirgoingdown:CaptainBoanergeswentwithaguardbeforethem,andCaptainConvictioncamebehind,andtheprisonerswentdown,boundinchains,inthemidst。SoI

  say,theprisonerswentinthemidst,andtheguardwentwithflyingcoloursbehindandbefore,buttheprisonerswentwithdroopingspirits。
