  Anotherresultofthisabruptdeparturewasaveryrapidrise,whichtooktheballoonaheightof3,000feetinthreeminutes’

  Seventhousandfeetverticallyinnineminutesisfastpace;

  butthevoyagersweretoknowhigherspeedyetthatdaywhentheverticalmotionwastobeinthereverseandwrongdirection。Attheheightnowreachedtheywereincloud,andwhilethusenvelopedthetemperature,asoftenhappens,remainedpracticallystationaryatabout32degrees,whilethatofthedewpointincreasedseveraldegrees。But,onpassingoutofthecloud,thetwotemperatureswereverysuddenlyseparated,thelatterdecreasingrapidlyunderadeepblueupperskythatwasnowwithoutacloud。Shortlyafterthisthetemperaturedroppedsuddenlysome8degrees,andthen,duringthenext12,000feet,creptslowlydownbysmallstages。

  Presentlytheballoon,reachingmorethantwentythousandfeet,or,roughly,fourmiles,andstillascending,thethermometerwastakenwithsmallfitsofrisingandfallingalternatelytillanaltitudeof24,000feetwasrecorded,atwhichpointotherandmoreseriousmattersintrudedthemselves。
