  13。Thegreatestandmostdangerousdisease,andtheonethatprovedfataltothegreatestnumber,wasconsumption。Withmanypersonsitcommencedduringthewinter,andofthesesomewereconfinedtobed,andothersboreuponfoot;themostofthosediedearlyinspringwhowereconfinedtobed;oftheothers,thecoughleftnotasingleperson,butitbecamemilderthroughthesummer;duringtheautumn,allthesewereconfinedtobed,andmanyofthemdied,butinthegreaternumberofcasesthediseasewaslongprotracted。Mostoftheseweresuddenlyattackedwiththesediseases,havingfrequentrigors,oftencontinualandacutefevers;unseasonable,copious,andcoldsweatsthroughout;greatcoldness,fromwhichtheyhadgreatdifficultyinbeingrestoredtoheat;thebowelsvariouslyconstipated,andagainimmediatelyinaloosestate,buttowardstheterminationinallcaseswithviolentloosenessofthebowels;adeterminationdownwardsofallmatterscollectedaboutthelungs;

  urineexcessive,andnotgood;troublesomemelting。Thecoughsthroughoutwerefrequent,andcopious,digested,andliquid,butnotbroughtupwithmuchpain;andevenwhentheyhadsomeslightpain,inallcasesthepurgingofthemattersaboutthelungswentonmildly。

  Thefauceswerenotveryirritable,norweretheytroubledwithanysaltishhumors;buttherewereviscid,white,liquid,frothy,andcopiousdefluxionsfromthehead。Butbyfarthegreatestmischiefattendingtheseandtheothercomplaints,wastheaversiontofood,ashasbeendescribed。Forneitherbeendescribed。Forneitherhadtheyanyrelishfordrinkalongwiththeirfood,butcontinuedwithoutthirst。Therewasheavinessofthebody,dispositiontocoma,inmostcasesswelling,whichendedindropsy;theyhadrigors,andweredelirioustowardsdeath。

  14。Theformofbodypeculiarlysubjecttophthisicalcomplaintswasthesmooth,thewhitish,thatresemblingthelentil;thereddish,theblue—eyed,theleucophlegmatic,andthatwiththescapulaehavingtheappearanceofwings:andwomeninlikemanner,withregardtothemelancholicandsubsanguineous,phreniticanddysentericaffectionsprincipallyattackedthem。Tenesmustroubledyoungpersonsofaphlegmatictemperament。Chronicdiarrhoea,acridandvisciddischargesfromthebowels,attackedthosewhoweretroubledwithbitterbile。

  15。Toallthosewhichhavebeendescribed,theseasonofspringwasmostinimical,andprovedfataltothegreatestnumbers:thesummerwasthemostfavorabletothem,andthefewestdiedthen;inautumn,andunderthePleiades,againtherediedgreatnumbers。Itappearstome,accordingtothereasonofthings,thatthecomingonofsummershouldhavedonegoodinthesecases;forwintercomingoncuresthediseasesofsummer,andsummercomingonremovesthediseasesofwinter。Andyetthesummerinquestionwasnotofitselfwellconstituted,foritbecamesuddenlyhot,southerly,andcalm;but,notwithstanding,itprovedbeneficialbyproducingachangeontheotherconstitution。
