Histenantsjoinedhim,andbydegreesmencametohishuntfromgreaterdistancesaroundhim。Asthenecessityforspaceincreased,increasingfromincreaseofhuntingambition,thericherandmoreambitioussquiresbegantoundertakethemanagementofwiderareas,andsoourhuntingdistrictswereformed。Butwithsuchextensionofareatherecame,ofcourse,necessityofextendedexpenditure,andsothefashionofsubscriptionlistsarose。TherehaveremainedsomefewgreatNimrodswhohavechosentobemagnanimousandtopayforeverything,despisingthecontributionsoftheirfollowers。SuchaonewasthelateEarlFitzhardinge,andaftersuchmannerin,asIbelieve,theBerkeleyhuntstillconducted。Butitneedhardlybeexplained,thatashuntingisnowconductedinEngland,suchasystemisneitherfairnorpalatable。Itisnotfairthatsogreatacostfortheamusementofothermenshouldfalluponanyoneman\'spocket;norisitpalatabletoothersthatsuchunlimitedpowershouldbeplacedinanyoneman\'shands。Theordinarymasterofsubscriptionhoundsisnodoubtautocratic,butheisnotautocraticwithallthepoweroftyrannywhichbelongstothedespotwhoruleswithouttaxation。Idoubtwhetheranymasterofasubscriptionpackwouldadvertisehismeetsforeleven,withanunderstandingthatthehoundswerenevertomovetilltwelve,whenheintendedtobepresentinperson。SuchwasthecasewithLordFitzhardinge,andIdonotknowthatitwasgenerallythoughtthathecarriedhispowertoofar。AndIthink,too,thatgentlemenfeelthattheyridewithmorepleasurewhentheythemselvescontributetothecostoftheirownamusement。
